Kenni Miller, a former shift manager at Sheetz in Altoona, Pa., experienced a unique sense of trust and appreciation as a Black man in the workplace. In 2024, Miller joined a class-action lawsuit against Sheetz, initiated by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). The lawsuit claimed that Sheetz’s criminal background checks disproportionately screened out applicants of color. Soon after President Trump began his term, the EEOC dropped the case under an executive order directing federal agencies to “deprioritize” cases of unintentional, disparate impacts on minority applicants.
This executive order led to a considerable reduction in civil rights cases across various federal departments, including education, housing, justice, and the EEOC. Although there isn’t a public tally of closed cases, legal advocates highlight a significant reduction in civil rights enforcement.
