A federal prosecutor in California has announced that authorities have initiated investigations linked to the state’s recent elections. This follows President Donald Trump’s accusations of election fraud, which lack evidence. Bill Essayli, the first assistant U.S. attorney for the Central District of California, revealed that his office is conducting “multiple election fraud investigations” in collaboration with the FBI. However, details of these investigations remain undisclosed.
Essayli stated, “We will follow the evidence wherever it leads and prosecute any violations of federal election law to the fullest extent,” and expressed criticism of California’s mail voting system, a frequent subject of Trump’s claims. The FBI has not responded to requests for comment regarding any election-related investigations in California.
Simultaneously, a federal prosecutor from the U.S. attorney’s office visited the ballot processing center for Los Angeles County. The L.A. County registrar’s office confirmed the visit to NBC News. A spokesperson from the registrar’s office explained that they were informed late Thursday about the visit, with the federal attorney attending to “observe ballot processing activities.”
The spokesperson mentioned that the individual received an overview of the public observation program and participated in a walkthrough of ballot processing operations. Ballot processing is open to public observation and routinely hosts observers from various interests, including politicians and advocacy groups.
The Justice Department has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the prosecutor’s visit. These events emerged shortly after Trump made unsupported claims that Democrats are attempting to “steal” California’s primary elections, which occurred on Tuesday.
Trump stated on Truth Social, “There’s BIG cheating by the Dumocrats in California. Votes are all tied up. May not be in for weeks. Under investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles. Why the vote counting DELAY???”
Under California’s vote-by-mail system, winner announcements often take days in competitive races. Ballots postmarked on or before election day, received within seven days after the election, are eligible for counting according to state laws.
In 2022, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, a Democrat, was declared the winner eight days post-election. Bass aims for another term and has progressed to the November elections, as projected by NBC News. Mail-in ballots, counted over several days, typically favor Democratic candidates in this blue-leaning state.
The California primary system allows the top two candidates to advance to the general election in November, regardless of party affiliation. With ongoing counts, Trump and allies, including Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton, have intensified their criticism of the vote-counting process.
NBC News projected Friday evening that Democratic gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra will advance to the general election. Hilton and Democratic candidate Tom Steyer are competing for the second slot. In the Los Angeles mayoral race, Trump-endorsed Spencer Pratt is contending with Democrat Nithya Raman to challenge Bass in November.
