A federal judge in Virginia has issued a temporary order halting the Trump administration from transferring funds related to a proposed $1.8 billion initiative. This move, led by Judge Leonie M. Brinkema of the Federal District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, aims to address a legal challenge presented by a group claiming exclusion from the fund.
The order prevents the establishment and disbursement of the fund, designed to assist individuals the administration deems harmed by the federal government, at least until a court hearing in June. This action marks the first significant legal impediment to the fund’s creation since its formal announcement.
The lawsuit, filed in Virginia, raises concerns about partisan targeting by the Trump administration. Individuals and entities behind this legal challenge anticipate being barred from benefiting from the fund. Similar lawsuits have also been introduced in Washington, D.C., and California. Additionally, several lawmakers, some of whom are Republicans, have voiced objections to the fund’s objectives.
Former President Trump has promoted the fund as a necessary response to alleged unfair practices by Democratic administrations. Among the anticipated applicants are individuals convicted for participating in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
Judge Brinkema, a Clinton-era appointee, stated that the temporary order serves to preserve current conditions and ensure that no funds are distributed until the scheduled hearing on June 12. Her directive specifically restricts financial transactions involving the fund and any consideration or disbursement of claims related to it.
