A prominent French TV host has issued an apology after making controversial comments about a soccer player’s decision to leave the World Cup for his child’s birth. The debate began when Belgium forward Jérémy Doku announced his intent to travel to London for the birth of his first child.
Doku’s choice provoked France Pierron, a French commentator, to criticize his departure. On the TV show “L’Equipe de Choc,” she remarked that childbirth is “a disgusting moment, where the dad is useless.” Pierron faced significant backlash and apologized on Tuesday. She posted on X that her remarks were personal and not representative of others. Pierron expressed regret for any offense caused.
Her employer, the sports daily L’Equipe, distanced itself from her comments, apologizing to Doku. They stated that her remarks did not reflect the publication’s values.
Doku reached London in time for the arrival of his son, Praise. He expressed gratitude on social media, saying, “Shireen and Praise are doing great, and my heart is full of gratitude. Welcoming my son is one of the greatest blessings.” Doku thanked his team for their support and anticipated returning to football.
Belgium captain Youri Tielemans publicly supported Doku. He stated, “Having a child is the most beautiful thing and being there as a dad is more than normal. I have three children, and those memories are irreplaceable.”
Doku missed Belgium’s World Cup match against Iran due to respiratory illness. Nonetheless, he was cleared to travel to London. Belgium faces New Zealand on Friday at BC Place, a game crucial for their advancement to the knockout round, following their draws in the initial matches.
