Governor’s Push for Traditional Values in Vologda

1 month ago 0

In a bid to align his region with the Kremlin’s conservative ideals, Georgy Y. Filimonov, governor of Vologda in northern Russia, has introduced sweeping measures reflecting “traditional Russian values.” His initiatives began in late 2023, aiming to position Vologda as a stronghold of “Russianness.”

Filimonov restricted alcohol sales significantly, allowing purchases for only two hours during workdays. At the same time, he enforced a near-ban on abortions in private clinics. His vision of a culturally rooted region also saw the installation of statues honoring Stalin and Ivan the Terrible. Moreover, attempts were made to name a youth group after Ivan the Terrible’s feared police force.

Public transport and aircraft in the region display nationalistic slogans, all painted a deep ruby red, symbolizing his commitment to these ideals. Filimonov has become a vocal advocate for increased population growth, encouraging citizens to fulfill what he sees as patriotic obligations through higher birth rates.

Critics suggest Filimonov’s campaign intertwines imperial and Soviet-era nostalgia with some of the country’s most stringent contemporary social policies. A mural in Vologda aptly labels it “the powerhouse of the Russian world,” capturing the essence of the governor’s vision for his region.
