The mother of a Congressional intern killed in 2025 praises President Donald Trump’s aggressive approach to reducing crime in Washington, D.C. The city’s homicide rate has dropped dramatically by over 40% in the past year.

Data from the Major Cities Chiefs Association reveals a 43.9% decrease in homicides in Washington, D.C., during the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year. The total count of homicides was 46 in 2026, compared to 82 in 2025.

Deployment of National Guard

The significant drop in homicides followed Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard and assume control of the local police force in August 2025. This action aimed to curb crime and restore order in the capital.

White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis commented that President Trump fulfilled his promise to make the country safer. She emphasized that the efforts led to numerous arrests and improved living conditions in the city.

Mother’s Perspective

Tamara Jachym, the mother of the late intern, expressed her support for the National Guard’s presence, noting that it brings about a noticeable difference in safety.

“Something’s working and I think extra eyes and ears on the ground is helping this happen,” Jachym said.

Jachym urged lawmakers who oppose deploying the National Guard to consider the safety of constituents who face violence and crime.

Broader Impact

The crime reduction strategy also yielded positive results in Memphis, Tennessee, where homicides dropped by 43.7% in the same period. This city also benefited from the National Guard’s deployment in 2025. The Major Cities Chiefs Association highlighted these similar declines.
