Iran Faces Ticket Allocation Challenges for World Cup

3 weeks ago 0

The Iranian Soccer Federation reported an unexpected development regarding their World Cup ticket allocation. FIFA revoked the ticket allocation for Iranian fans at the team’s three group-stage matches in the United States. Each federation receives 8% of stadium capacity for their games. This amounts to thousands of tickets per event.

Typically, these tickets are made available to loyal fans soon after the tournament draw. This year, due to a U.S. travel ban, many Iranian fans face obstacles. Iran’s opening match is on June 15 at Los Angeles Rams’ stadium in Inglewood against New Zealand. The federation stated in local media that they can’t provide tickets to supporters now. This situation increases tensions between Iranian soccer, FIFA, and the U.S., which began military actions against Iran on February 28.

FIFA controls World Cup ticketing. However, the Iranian federation suggested that the U.S. is hindering their fans’ stadium access. “This incident raises questions about the influence of political considerations on the world’s biggest football event,” they stated. FIFA responded, saying it is “working closely with the IR Iran Football Federation to identify compliant solutions” for fan attendance.

Recent meetings between FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Iranian officials in Turkey focused on logistical support. Iran’s 26-man squad has not been active competitively since February due to domestic league suspensions caused by war. They now train in Tijuana, Mexico, instead of Tucson, Arizona. This year marks Iran’s seventh appearance at a men’s World Cup.

Visa issues also plague Iranian officials. They face difficulties entering the U.S. to support Iran’s games against Belgium and Egypt. Andrew Giuliani, executive director of the White House FIFA task force, stated the team can enter the U.S. a day before their match. Some officials are not entering due to claims of false representation.

Fans face visa challenges and financial sanctions, affecting attendance. Currently, Iranian fans cannot obtain any tickets through their federation. FIFA would need to sell about 5,600 tickets for Iran’s match against New Zealand if Iranian allocations remain revoked. The FIFA sales site listed available tickets for this game.

Infantino emphasized in 2017 that fans and teams must access host countries for World Cup participation. This stance came during U.S., Canada, and Mexico’s co-hosting bid. Hostile receptions for World Cup personnel are another challenge. A FIFA match referee from Somalia was denied U.S. entry and removed from the tournament.

An Iraqi player experienced detainment on arrival in Chicago, while a delegation photographer faced entry denial. Piara Powar, head of FIFA’s anti-discrimination monitoring partner, questioned the World Cup’s management. He criticized U.S. immigration policies, suggesting they overshadow the tournament’s global celebration.
