Iran’s Historical Struggle for Independence and its Impact Today

On October 22, 1951, Iranian Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh stood in Philadelphia, speaking at Independence Hall. He drew comparisons between America’s struggle for independence and Iran’s efforts to liberate itself from British control over its resources.

“The creed of national independence is a universal one, and it is held by all peoples,” Mossadegh stated.

Two years later, Iran’s political landscape changed drastically when the United States and Britain orchestrated a coup to remove Mossadegh. This action was a reaction to his decision to nationalize Iran’s oil industry, specifically the British-owned Anglo-Iranian Oil Company.
