Iran’s Supreme Leader Distances Himself from U.S. Agreement

2 weeks ago 0

Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, has distanced himself from a recent agreement with the United States. During his first public remarks on the matter, Khamenei emphasized that he agreed to the deal but did not support signing it as a principle. He refrained from providing specific details.

The agreement offers Iran significant economic advantages while putting off discussions on the nuclear program. Khamenei explained his approval for the deal was due to Iran’s president, Masoud Pezeshkian, accepting responsibility and vowing to uphold Iranians’ rights and the ‘resistance front,’ likely referring to Hezbollah, which opposes Israel.

Khamenei mentioned that Pezeshkian assured him there would be no submission to unreasonable demands from the American side. While praising Iran’s diplomats, Khamenei criticized President Trump, suggesting the deal was made out of desperation.

This statement effectively shifts responsibility for the agreement onto Iran’s elected government. Iran’s political system blends elected institutions with theocratic leadership, where the supreme leader holds significant power.
