Julianne Moore recently stirred controversy with remarks she made about her film preferences. In an interview with Variety during the Kering Women in Motion Talk at the Cannes Film Festival, the 65-year-old actress expressed disinterest in movies featuring ‘explosions and guns.’ She stated, ‘I am less and less interested in tragedy.’
Moore highlighted the global challenges, saying, ‘At a time when things are really rough globally, investing in a story that feels pretend, where the emotion does not match what’s happening in the world, is difficult for me. I don’t want to engage in it.’
She often notices when scripts or films contain ‘easy stakes,’ and expressed a preference for deeper storytelling. Moore clarified, ‘I don’t like someone being murdered. I don’t like explosions and guns. I don’t like histrionics. I don’t like things that raise the stakes without real feeling underneath.’
Her comments faced online backlash after a clip of her interview circulated. Many fans criticized Moore’s statement, noting her participation in movies involving violence. Fans referenced her role in ‘Hannibal,’ where a character’s skull was removed, as an example of her involvement in violent films.
However, some defended Moore. Supporters praised her focus on emotional content over chaotic plotlines. One supporter said, ‘Julianne Moore choosing emotion over chaos is exactly why she’s respected worldwide.’
Moore has previously faced criticism. Vili Fualaau, known for his controversial relationship with his sixth-grade teacher, criticized her film ‘May December’ as a ‘ripoff’ of his life story. Despite this, Moore maintained that ‘May December’ is an original story created with director Todd Haynes.
Throughout her career, Moore has received accolades, including an Academy Award for her role in ‘Still Alice.’ She was honored at Cannes with the Kering Women in Motion Award, acknowledging her contributions to advancing women’s roles in society and film.
