First responders rushed to a tragic scene at Kansas’s Stryker Sports Complex. A driver allegedly plowed into children and spectators during a youth soccer game in Wichita. Dispatch audio from the event captures the urgency, with the incident labeled as a ‘mass-casualty incident.’
Cole Adrian, 6, and Nicholas Schafer, 35, from McPherson, were killed. The event occurred on October 17, 2026, when a pickup truck drove onto the field, resulting in two deaths and ten injuries, including five children.
The 34-year-old female driver was released with no charges. Authorities have not disclosed whether future charges will arise. She was initially in custody but released pending toxicology results and a vehicle examination. Two of her children, one playing soccer at another field, were in the truck during the incident.
Police consulted with the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office before releasing her.
A 30-minute dispatch log shows first responders managing the chaos. At least eleven patients needed attention, with some cases described as ‘working blues,’ indicating severe emergencies. Nine patients included ‘two code blacks’ and ‘two code blues,’ with others still assessed.
Audio mentions a 5-year-old with multi-system trauma and a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 15, indicating responsiveness. A responder spoke of another victim in the field, but their discovery time remains unclear.
Wichita plans temporary barriers at the complex to prevent future incidents. The public works division confirmed this action, and police will be present at the facility, alongside mental health professionals for family support.
McPherson Mayor Jim Loving expressed the town’s sorrow in a statement, emphasizing community support and gratitude for those who helped before first responders arrived.
Wichita Police indicated the investigation remains active. Updates will be provided when available.
