The upcoming mayoral runoff election in Los Angeles will see Mayor Karen Bass and City Council member Nithya Raman face off in November. This matchup follows a primary that included notable figures like Spencer Pratt, a former reality TV star and Republican. Despite his initial strong showing, Pratt did not advance, with Raman surpassing him as vote tallies continued.
Karen Bass, elected mayor in 2022 after a contest with Rick Caruso, now contends with criticism regarding her handling of last year’s devastating wildfires. The fires, which destroyed over 16,000 structures, highlighted challenges in the city’s emergency response, and Bass’ absence from the city during the crisis drew additional scrutiny. A Los Angeles Times poll indicated 56% of respondents viewed her unfavorably.
Raman announced her candidacy against this backdrop, having initially supported Bass. Raman emphasized her commitment to addressing critical issues such as housing, homelessness, and public safety, while voicing frustrations with bureaucratic barriers to change in City Hall.
“My team and I have tried so hard to intervene aggressively on the most urgent issues that this city is facing,” Raman noted during her campaign launch.
Bass countered these claims, questioning Raman’s effectiveness on the council. She also acknowledged public discontent but highlighted progress her administration achieved. At a debate, Bass stated, “The problem is that for you to act like you’re brand new or you’ve been on the outside for the last almost six years is not accurate.”
Spencer Pratt’s candidacy attracted national attention due, in part, to his media presence and criticism of state and city leadership. Pratt lost his home to the wildfires and voiced strong critiques of Bass, along with commitments to tackling homelessness. Although former President Donald Trump did not formally endorse Pratt, he expressed support for his bid.
Raman’s advance to the runoff represents a shift from a potential race against Pratt, indicating a different campaign landscape. Prior to the primary, polls showed mixed results for one-on-one matchups between Bass, Raman, and Pratt. In Democrat-only scenarios, 40% of respondents remained undecided, reflecting a campaign likely characterized by a broad range of voter uncertainties.
