Ken Jennings on Preparing for ‘Jeopardy!’ and His Experience as Host

1 month ago 0

Ken Jennings, known for his extraordinary “Jeopardy!” winning streak, offers practical advice for potential contestants. He emphasizes that watching the show regularly is key to preparation. “If you watch ‘Jeopardy!’, you’ll get used to the rhythm of the host’s voice and recognize the types of material covered,” he shared with Fox News Digital at the TCM Classic Film Festival.

“If someone is preparing for the show, learn U.S. presidents and their first ladies in order, along with world capitals. These are topics with significant payoff for cramming,” Jennings noted, recalling his own preparation for the show.

As someone who knows the pressure of being on the show, Jennings feels empathy for contestants. He acknowledges the challenge of performing under the bright lights and cameras. “Some contestants rise to the occasion, becoming their best ‘Jeopardy!’ selves, while others might find it overwhelming,” he said.

His compassion extends to helping players craft interesting interview stories, though he wishes he could assist them more during the game, noting an instance where a contestant made an error in their Final Jeopardy! wager.

Despite his impressive run, Jennings admits to feeling nervous in certain categories. “There was always a lot of hockey on ‘Jeopardy!’, perhaps due to Alex’s Canadian background, and I was not as knowledgeable about ice hockey,” he said.

Now, as the host, Jennings feels a connection to the late Alex Trebek. “Hosting ‘Jeopardy!’ is about making the game and contestants the stars. I try to echo Alex’s approach while bringing in my personality,” he said. Jennings has learned valuable lessons from Trebek, emphasizing the importance of not overshadowing the players.

Jennings enjoys watching “Jeopardy!” tournaments, where top players compete and become familiar to the audience, likening their recognition to that of star athletes.

Surprisingly, a week’s worth of “Jeopardy” episodes are filmed in a single day. “After one game, players change outfits before the next taping, creating the illusion of different days,” Jennings explained.

Reminiscing about his childhood, Jennings shared his deep love for trivia. “Watching ‘Jeopardy!’ with Alex Trebek made my curiosity acceptable. It was a safe space for those who value knowledge,” he reflected. Despite never imagining he’d host the show, Jennings feels fortunate to have the role. “I love ‘Jeopardy!’ and feel very lucky to be its host,” he confessed with humility.
