Kevion Moton Leads Waukegan Bulldogs with Determination on and off the Field

Waukegan High School senior Kevion Moton stands as a key player for the Bulldogs, a team that struggled through a winless 2025 season due to a limited roster. His efforts aim to drive change within the team. Although Moton is not one to speak much, his actions speak volumes. ‘I am not a big talker, but I want my actions to show others how to do things correctly,’ Moton explained. He believes his dedication during the offseason has inspired some teammates to be more prepared.

This year’s team has seen an increase in numbers, with over 40 players, signaling potential improvement for the Bulldogs. Darrell Thomas, the first-year coach of Waukegan, hopes this translates to better performance. Despite a 41-12 loss at Niles North in their first game, the team’s spirit remains strong as they gear up to play North Chicago in their first home game.

‘This year we’ve come together more as a team, and a lot of people have stepped up in coming to practice,’ Moton noted. ‘Some of our backups are still learning, but I think we’ll be able to rely on them being able to compete.’ Since 2016, the Bulldogs have not won more than one game in a season. Moton’s aim is to win two or three games and challenge other teams, reversing the trend of lopsided losses.

In the season opener, Moton delivered an impressive performance with three tackles, including two for losses and a sack. His presence also boosted the team’s rushing game, gaining 213 yards on the ground. ‘Kevion has been playing for us for four years, and he was always an impact player on the JV level,’ said Thomas. He praised Moton for his commitment to offseason workouts and strength training, now tasked with versatile roles to maximize his impact.

Transitioning from linebacker to defensive end aligns well with Moton’s strengths. He appreciates the direct engagement at the defensive end position. ‘At end, there’s more action there, and they’re more likely to be coming right at you, which I like,’ he shared. His training focused on improving speed and endurance, with sessions under Zion-Benton track coach Darnell Rios, running hills, and neighborhood runs. ‘I definitely noticed a difference,’ Moton said, highlighting his increased agility.

Moton’s influence extends to his teammates. Senior middle linebacker Jeremiah Hood acknowledged Moton’s motivational role. ‘You can see him always trying to motivate others to get to practice, and that way they can get bigger and better with us,’ Hood stated. Moton’s leadership reflected on the field as he bolstered the defensive line, aiding his teammates to perform better.

What drives Moton is his passion for football and the camaraderie it brings. ‘There’s no feeling in the world that’s better than being out there with the people I’ve grown up playing with,’ he expressed. The support from the crowd and the shared joy of the game fuel his enthusiasm, creating a powerful connection with his team and fans.
