Jalen Brunson led the New York Knicks to a series-opening victory in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. Despite Victor Wembanyama’s impressive debut for the San Antonio Spurs, the real story lies in the collective effort of the team.
Game 2 of the title series is set for Friday night in San Antonio. The Spurs are looking to equalize the series before heading to New York. Meanwhile, the Knicks have their sights set on becoming the first team since Houston in 1995 to achieve two road wins at the start of the NBA Finals. The game tips off at 8:42 p.m. EDT and will be broadcast on ABC. The Spurs are favored by 6.5 points.
In their Game 1 win, New York overcame a 14-point deficit in the third quarter, finishing with an 11-0 run. Brunson’s 30-point performance earned praise, but attention was also on Josh Hart. Although he scored just three points, Hart contributed significantly with 15 rebounds, six assists, and four steals. This combination of achievements in an NBA Finals game has only been matched by Larry Bird since these stats have been recorded.
“His energy is just relentless. It doesn’t stop,” noted Brunson about Hart, recalling their time together at Villanova. “He eats candy all the time. That tells you who he is. He’s a big kid with an absurd amount of energy.”
The Knicks aim to extend their winning streak to 13 consecutive playoff games, which would be the second-longest single-season streak in NBA history. The record for playoff games in a row is 15, set by Golden State in 2017.
Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox stated, “We know it’s a long series. Obviously, you want to win every game that you have on your home court, but it doesn’t happen that way every time. We try to go in and fix the things we need to fix. Obviously, we want a different outcome.”
