Lionsgate’s ‘Power Ballad’ Explores Music and Friendship

3 weeks ago 0

The latest trailer for Lionsgate’s ‘Power Ballad’ features Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas in lead roles, directed by John Carney. This film intertwines music and personal discovery, showcasing Rudd as Rick Power, a wedding singer in Ireland who once enjoyed life as a rock band frontman.

Rick, having given up his rock star dreams after marriage, fronts a band named The Bride and Groove. His past life occasionally tempts him, much to the chagrin of his drummer who reminds him of their current role as entertaining performers, not rock stars.

We’re not rock stars, Rick. We’re human jukeboxes.

The story takes a twist when the band meets Danny Wilson, played by Nick Jonas, a former boy band member struggling to make it solo. After a chance to sing with Rick’s band at a wedding, Rick and Danny quickly bond over shared experiences in the music industry.

An impromptu jam session brings them closer as they exchange ideas and tips on their music. Danny is especially impressed by Rick’s song, “How to Write a Song Without You.” This connection ignites a creative spark between the two musicians.

As Danny returns to Los Angeles, he faces pressure from his manager, Mac, played by Jack Reynor, to produce a hit song. Without delivering a smash hit, Danny risks losing his luxurious lifestyle. Despite doubts, Danny presents his tracks to his manager.

Weeks pass, and Rick finds himself unexpectedly hearing Danny’s new hit, the same song they collaborated on. This discovery leads to a tense and tumultuous journey as Rick seeks recognition for his contribution, though without concrete proof, threatening both his professional and personal life.

Paul Rudd’s portrayal as Rick, alongside Nick Jonas’s Danny, provides a vibrant and engaging performance. Beth Fallon complements the cast as Rick’s daughter, Aja, adding depth to the storyline.

Director John Carney, known for his music-driven films, delivers yet another musical narrative. Although ‘Power Ballad’ doesn’t quite reach the heights of previous works like ‘Once’ or ‘Sing Street,’ it still manages to entertain. The audience at the screening appreciated the film’s conclusion, demonstrating Carney’s ability to satisfy viewers.

The film, rated R for language and drug use, runs for 1 hour and 38 minutes. ‘Power Ballad’ offers entertainment with its comedic elements and solid soundtrack, making it an enjoyable watch.
