Marist Volleyball Star Michael Forbes’ Journey and Team’s Success

3 weeks ago 0

Before entering high school, Michael Forbes from Marist dabbled in a variety of sports. When asked about his early interests, he easily listed them: basketball, swimming, track, and some football. However, volleyball was a new adventure he began in his freshman year, after his friends suggested giving it a shot. ‘I decided to join in when my friends said, ‘Let’s play volleyball,’ Forbes recalled. His enthusiasm for the sport quickly grew.

On Friday afternoon, Forbes showcased his skills in the state quarterfinals at Bolingbrook. He played a crucial role as the junior middle hitter, contributing six kills to help the RedHawks secure a spot in the semifinals for the third year. Their victory over Lane Tech ended with a score of 25-22, 25-19. Ball State recruit Briggs Corona led the defending state champions Marist, now 30-7, with 10 kills. Freshman Max DeHoyos added five kills, while Drew Fiedler provided 20 assists. For Lane Tech, Mohamed Abdelradi delivered eight kills, and Carver Forsman added six. Marist will face Oak Park-River Forest, with a record of 32-5-1, in the semifinals on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Forbes shared why he committed to volleyball over other sports. ‘Volleyball is addicting,’ Forbes explained. ‘I love the pace. It’s noncontact and engaging with six players on the court and two opposing teams.’ Forbes’ connection with his team was evident in their recent match. The composition of this Marist team marks a significant change from the previous teams, known for their state championship success.

When Forbes initially joined in his freshman year, he didn’t imagine reaching state finals. Yet, despite the challenges faced in early practices, he believed the young RedHawks squad was capable. ‘The start was rocky,’ he admitted. ‘We needed to connect as a team. Now, we’re working as one, different from when we began.’

Marist coach Jordan Vidovic aims for his fifth consecutive state championship, guiding both boys’ and girls’ volleyball teams. Despite predictions favoring Oak Park-River Forest and Glenbard West as contenders for the championship, Vidovic takes pride in Marist reaching the Final Four, surprising skeptics.

‘We didn’t forget the achievements of past teams,’ Vidovic stated. ‘The players embraced the legacy and improved their teamwork, which has become part of our program’s fabric.’

Despite losing 10 seniors, Fiedler emphasized the RedHawks’ readiness. ‘We knew what we were capable of achieving,’ he said. Forbes, standing at 6-foot-2, entered the state quarterfinals with impressive stats: 305 kills, 87 blocks, 151 digs, and 25 aces. Recognized by the Illinois Volleyball Coaches Association, he made the first team all-state in his third year playing volleyball. Corona and Fiedler also received accolades, making the second and third teams, respectively.

‘Being acknowledged like this is motivating,’ Forbes remarked. ‘It prepared me well for the state competition.’ The prospect of future success remains promising for Marist, given the return of underclassmen. Yet, the RedHawks concentrate on the present, ready to defy expectations as underdogs. ‘We know that we are underestimated,’ Forbes stated. ‘But we work diligently and focus on our performance on the court.’
