A recent audit revealed significant challenges in toll collection faced by the Maryland Transportation Authority. The audit highlighted the agency’s struggle to recover in excess of $800 million owed in unpaid tolls and penalties.
This shortfall is attributed to out-of-state drivers, whose debts comprised $818.1 million as of January. The report points to a lack of action from the agency to recover these funds successfully.
In addition, the audit shed light on Virginia drivers accounting for more than $234 million of the total unpaid tolls and penalties over a span of five years.
The audit’s findings raise concerns over the fiscal management of Maryland’s toll systems and suggest the need for more robust measures to secure owed payments.
