Melania Trump Critiques Donald Trump’s Public Gestures

President Donald Trump recently shared insights into what First Lady Melania Trump dislikes about his public appearances. Speaking to supporters in Las Vegas, Trump noted that Melania criticized his signature rally dance moves and his imitation of a weightlifter when discussing transgender athletes in sports. According to Trump, Melania regards these actions as not befitting of a president.

During the event, Trump told the crowd, “She hates it when I imitate no men in women’s sports. She hates it when I do ‘the weightlifter.'” He mimicked the action of lifting weights and added, “She said it’s not presidential. I said, ‘Well, it may not be presidential, but I won the election in a landslide, so I don’t know.'” This isn’t the first instance of Trump revealing Melania’s disapproval of his more theatrical moments on stage. He previously shared that she doesn’t appreciate his dancing or impressions, describing her as “a very classy person.”

Trump Says Melania Dislikes His Dancing

Trump’s dancing has become one of his standout rally traditions, particularly when moving to the Village People’s “Y.M.C.A.” at campaign events. Trump shared that Melania believes his dance routine doesn’t align with the image of a president. Earlier this year, he mentioned that Melania questioned whether former President Franklin D. Roosevelt, whom she considered “an elegant fellow,” would have engaged in such behavior.

During a January address to Republican lawmakers, Trump said, “She hates when I dance. She actually said, ‘Can you imagine FDR dancing?'” Trump has recounted similar stories before. At the 2023 California Republican Party fall convention, he recalled Melania telling him that his dancing was “not presidential.” “I said, ‘But people like it,'” Trump remembered. He explained that audiences often encourage him to perform. “I said I have a problem because everybody wants it. They are screaming ‘dance, dance, dance,'” Trump remarked.

Melania’s Disapproval of Trump’s Weightlifting Impression

Aside from dancing, Melania also disapproves of Trump’s gesture imitating a weightlifter when discussing transgender athletes in women’s sports. During these speeches, Trump uses exaggerated hand movements to mimic lifting weights. He stated that Melania considers this performance inappropriate for a president. On Wednesday, Trump shared, “Melania hates when I do ‘the weightlifter.'”

In January, he recalled Melania’s feedback: “‘Darling, please, the weightlifting is terrible.'” To this, Trump responded by noting his presidency: “I said, ‘But I did become president.'” He had previously described this exchange during his 2023 California speech, quoting Melania’s remark: “‘It’s not presidential.'”

The First Lady’s Feedback on Trump’s Public Appearance

Trump has often brought up Melania’s comments regarding his public appearances. During the 2023 California Republican Party speech, he shared an instance where Melania criticized his appearance on camera after watching one of his interviews: “‘You didn’t look good, too much light.'”

Despite these criticisms, Trump’s rally style, including his dancing and gestures, remains a significant part of his campaign identity. Supporters frequently encourage these performances, creating expectations for his events. While Melania maintains a lower public profile and rarely speaks about her husband’s comments on their private conversations, Trump often portrays her as someone who guides him on his image and presentation.
