The kick-off for the round-of-32 match between Mexico and Ecuador at the 2026 World Cup has been delayed by an hour due to severe weather in Mexico City. Originally scheduled for 9 pm ET, the match will now begin at 10 pm ET.
Thunderstorms and lightning in the area forced the postponement of pre-match warm-ups. FIFA confirmed the delay, stating that there will be no hydration breaks during the game, emphasizing the safety of all involved. The match can be viewed on Fox and Fubo.
The delay allowed fans to purchase more beverages, while the stadium DJ kept spirits high with music, including the Argentine rock classic “De Musica Ligera” by Soda Stereo.
“Due to adverse weather conditions in Mexico City, including risk caused by lightning in the vicinity of the stadium, kick-off has been delayed to 8 pm local time (10 pm ET). No hydration breaks will take place during this match.”
Fans were advised to remain in their seats, enjoying the unexpected extra entertainment as Mexican and Ecuadorian goalkeepers took contrasting receptions. Boos were directed at Ecuador’s keepers, while Mexico’s were cheered.
For Ecuador, the match carries emotional significance, honoring striker Christian “Chucho” Benitez, who had a strong connection to Mexico City and passed away in 2013. Former teammates have paid tribute, emphasizing his importance in Ecuadorian football history.
On the field, Mexico’s Gilberto Mora, a 17-year-old, starts for his second match under manager Javier Aguirre. Key players like Erik Lira and Luis Romo aim to control the midfield. Ecuador remains unchanged from their recent win over Germany, with an attacking lineup featuring Nilson Angulo and Gonzalo Plata.
The weather remains unpredictable, with continued rain and lightning creating a dramatic atmosphere at Estadio Azteca.
