Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced her support for Representative Haley Stevens ahead of the state’s Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate. Stevens, seen as a centrist, and the progressive Dr. Abdul El-Sayed lead the race as early voting commences. Whitmer’s endorsement may strengthen Stevens’ position, as she has previously achieved significant victories in the state.
During an event at a Teamsters hall in Detroit, Whitmer praised Stevens’ capabilities alongside South Carolina Representative Jim Clyburn. “Michiganders need a fighter in Washington,” Whitmer declared, emphasizing Stevens’ determination and experience.
Stevens, who succeeded in flipping a Republican House seat in 2018, has additional support from Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and retiring Michigan Senator Gary Peters. In contrast, El-Sayed’s campaign receives backing from Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, highlighting the divide within the Democratic party.
The primary takes place on August 4, where the chosen Democrat will challenge former Republican Representative Mike Rogers in November. Winning Michigan is critical for Democrats aiming to shift the U.S. Senate from Republican control.
