Benson held a clear fundraising and polling lead over competitor Chris Swanson before the primary. Swanson rose to prominence in 2020 by peacefully engaging with protesters in Flint, Michigan, following George Floyd’s death. He later spoke at the 2024 Democratic National Convention, supporting Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Swanson announced his gubernatorial campaign in early 2025.
