The Naperville Central Redhawks reached the Class 4A state semifinals with strong performances from their players. Senior left fielder Michael Page played a crucial role throughout the season and in the semifinal, even as the team faced a 9-1 defeat against Maine South at Slammers Stadium in Joliet.
Page, committed to North Central College, showcased his skills by going 2-for-3 with a walk and scoring the only run for the Redhawks. Despite the team’s loss, his efforts were commendable. He also defensively excelled by catching all three balls that came his way. Coach Mike Stock praised Page’s senior year, remarking, “He’s been great. He’s developed into a strong left fielder and is the best hitter I’ve seen consistently.”
Throughout the game, Page maintained a .383 average, starting off strong with an opposite-field single in the first inning and another single to the right in the third. Reflecting on his performance, Page said, “Jumping on that first fastball really got us going.” However, the Redhawks missed opportunities, leaving the bases loaded in both the first and third innings, ultimately stranding 10 runners overall.
While the Hawks capitalized on five errors, scoring early with a 7-0 lead, Naperville Central’s journey to the semifinals was noteworthy. Page acknowledged the unexpected progress during the season with a senior-heavy team and strong leadership alongside senior third baseman/pitcher Grant Umbright.
Umbright, who mirrored Page’s performance by going 2-for-3 with a walk, voiced high confidence in Page. “There was no better teammate,” Umbright noted. He emphasized Page’s reliability in the field and at the plate, complementing each other’s roles to maximize the team’s potential.
Coach Stock credited Page’s consistent success to his dedication. “He works hard, got stronger, and remained confident,” Stock remarked, noting Page hit safely in 14 of the team’s 15 conference games. Both Page and Umbright were pivotal in the Redhawks’ accomplishments this season.
The Redhawks now look to finish their run on a positive note in the third-place game against Mount Carmel. Page expressed gratitude for the memorable journey alongside his teammates, “We have 17 seniors. We’ve been really strong, even if today didn’t go as planned.”
