Kyle Busch, a two-time NASCAR Cup champion, passed away on Thursday in an unexpected incident that has left the racing community in shock. At 41, Busch’s death was a significant loss. Details about the cause have not been disclosed, but a 911 call from Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office indicated he experienced severe symptoms. The call described Busch as coughing up blood and struggling to breathe on the bathroom floor. Despite the condition, he was alert during this incident.
Busch, known for piloting the No. 7 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet, was admitted to a hospital in Charlotte where he succumbed a day later. Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR’s CEO since April, shared during a news conference that Busch had texted him a day before his collapse. Busch had jokingly proposed an ‘over-40 rule’ for competing in all Truck Series races in the upcoming season, acknowledging his history of successes in the series.
O’Donnell recalled the context of the message: ‘What do you think about an over-40 rule to compete in all the Truck Series races next year?’ O’Donnell mentioned the rule was originally to limit dominant drivers like Busch from overshadowing others by allowing only eight truck races a season for seasoned NASCAR Cup drivers.
Busch’s remarkable career includes 762 starts in the Cup Series and 63 wins. He achieved championships with Joe Gibbs Racing in 2015 and 2019. He holds all-time records for victories in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts and Craftsman Truck Series, with 102 and 69 wins, respectively. A recent triumph was his win at Dover in the Truck Series, where he led 147 laps.
His contributions to the sport were notable, and his passion for racing was evident in his constant engagement and ideas. The NASCAR community and fans are saddened by his passing, remembering his drive to improve and impact the sport.
