A 12-year-old boy from New Jersey is in critical condition after an incident during baseball warm-ups. Xavier Taylor was hit in the head during the warm-up session before a game last week. The event took place on Tuesday night at Fellowship Columbia Bank Field near Maple Shade, according to a report by NBC Philadelphia.
After the incident, Xavier collapsed on the field. Emergency services airlifted him to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey. The police confirmed these details to NBC Philadelphia.
The Maple Shade Youth Baseball Association issued a statement focusing on their support for Xavier and his family. The statement emphasized their commitment to providing assistance through prayer and faith. The association expressed gratitude for the support from the community and encouraged continued prayers for Xavier.
“Our primary goal now is to ensure we are there for them in prayer and faith, helping them every way we can,” the statement said. “We deeply appreciate the support shown by the community and those around the country; please keep all prayers coming.”
Greg Taylor, Xavier’s father, shared in a video posted Sunday that his son remains in critical condition and relies on a ventilator. He mentioned the family’s day-by-day approach to hope for improvement. Greg recounted a touching moment when their youngest son brought Xavier a pair of shoes, declaring they would be for when Xavier walks out of the hospital.
On Thursday night, the community gathered for a vigil at the same field where the incident occurred. Teammates and community members showed support by wearing Xavier’s team number, No. 6. Greg Taylor addressed the crowd, expressing his son’s love for the game and his belief that Xavier will return to play.
In support of Xavier, the Maple Shade community united by lighting up the Main Street in blue, the color of Xavier’s team. The Maple Shade Youth Baseball Facebook page encouraged members to place baseball bats on their porches. They called for a rally on Sunday evening, May 31, asking players to display a bat as a sign of solidarity for Xavier’s recovery.
Other local teams contributed by posting supportive pictures for Xavier on their social media accounts.
