Scrutiny of Deleted Social Media Posts
Democratic socialist Darializa Avila Chevalier, a New York congressional candidate, comes under fire over a social media account that featured posts supporting communism and Marxist ideologies. The candidate, backed by figures like New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), faced backlash over her Twitter account, Darializabonet, which was deleted in June 2022.
According to CNN, the account included praise for Karl Marx, criticism of libraries for lacking Marxist literature, and quotes from convicted cop killer Assata Shakur. A retweeted post expressed frustration with capitalism, highlighting perceived absurdities in rejecting communism due to concerns about variety.
Backlash from Various Political Figures
Avila Chevalier, already criticized for past posts advocating for police abolition and desecrating the American flag, faced widespread condemnation from conservatives and moderates alike following the recent CNN report. Prominent figures such as Senator John Fetterman voiced concern over the party’s far-left shift, questioning the party’s stance on such radical expressions.
“Our party has become an orgy of socialism,” Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., commented.
Students and political commentators also voiced their opinions, questioning the distinctions between socialism and communism among Democratic Socialists. The candidate’s radical views have drawn comparisons to historical ideologies and organizations.
Impact on the Election
Despite the controversies surrounding her, Avila Chevalier managed to defeat the incumbent, Democratic Rep. Adriano Espaillat, in New York’s 13th District Democratic primary. She is predicted to win against her Republican opponent in one of the nation’s most Democratic cities.
Fox News Digital contacted Avila Chevalier for comment. Her history continues to generate debate among both critics and supporters.
