On a memorable Friday in Chicago, former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama personally greeted the first 100 visitors at the new Obama Presidential Center. The couple, alongside LeVar Burton, known for hosting “Reading Rainbow,” engaged with school children by reading “Where the Wild Things Are.” During the reading, Michelle Obama humorously noted, “Although there were no kings,” drawing applause from those present.
The opening backdrop featured a stunning 38-foot-tall painting inspired by Carl Sandburg’s 1914 poem about Chicago. This cultural tribute added to the day’s significance as guests had the unique experience of interacting with the Obamas.
For Sonya Hankerson of Ft. Lauderdale, this experience was particularly poignant. She embraced a statue of the Obamas, cherishing the moment. Similarly, 18-year-old Houefa Agassounon from Chicago expressed emotional gratitude, having previously written to the Obama Foundation for the opportunity to be present at this opening.
The grand opening coincided with Juneteenth and followed a vibrant dedication ceremony. Notable attendees included three former presidents, along with an array of politicians, celebrities, and more. Thousands joined the event via a livestream from a nearby park.
The center stands proudly on Chicago’s South Side, near the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry and the University of Chicago. With tickets sold out through November, attendees on opening day enjoyed the rare privilege of meeting the Obamas.
Designed to embody unity, the towering museum features segments of Obama’s speeches and offers insight into the lives of America’s first Black president and first lady. Beyond the museum, the center provides public amenities including a branch of the Chicago Public Library, sports facilities, and picnic areas.
The center’s architectural highlight, a tower designed to symbolize hands coming together, bears extracts from Obama’s 2015 Selma-to-Montgomery march speech, beginning with, “You are America.”
