The Pentagon recently made a strategic decision to remove a dozen U.S. Air Force bomber aircraft from the Fairford air base in Britain. Reports suggest the U.S. military is concerned about potential threats from Iranian drones.
Sources, including the Wall Street Journal, indicate the fear stems from a potential strike similar to last year’s “Operation Spiderweb.” In this operation, Ukrainian forces launched surprise attacks using drones hidden in freight containers, targeting Russian aircraft far from the strike origin.
This decision raises questions about the U.S.’s current ability to defend its bases from drone attacks. One year after the Ukrainian example, this suggests that the U.S., like Russia, is still challenged in effectively countering drone swarms.
