MEXICO CITY — The U.S. Treasury Department has enacted new sanctions against a faction within Mexico’s criminal landscape known as Cartel del Noreste. This move targets four individuals and 11 businesses tied to the cartel.
Originating from the former Los Zetas organization, Cartel del Noreste has earned notoriety for its involvement in illegal activities, including money laundering. The group allegedly launders money through the acquisition of horses and their participation in races held near the U.S.-Mexico border.
The Treasury’s action aims to isolate these entities economically, curtailing their operations and hindering further illicit financial maneuvers. The sanctions are part of an ongoing effort to combat organized crime and its impact on both countries.
These developments underscore the collaborative approach between U.S. entities and Mexican law enforcement to dismantle organized crime syndicates. The sanctions are expected to yield significant disruptions in the cartel’s operational capabilities.
