Pete Buttigieg Distances from Biden’s ‘Build Back Better’ Slogan

Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, in a recent interview with Politico, expressed a shift away from traditional political slogans associated with President Joe Biden. Buttigieg, seen as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential race, emphasized moving forward rather than focusing on past strategies.

Buttigieg stated, “I’m trying to purge my vocabulary of anything with the prefix ‘re-‘ in it, anything with the word back in it.” He spoke against the concept of ‘Build Back Better,’ which was central to Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign. Buttigieg believes the party should concentrate on new horizons instead.

During the conversation, Buttigieg was asked if his stance implies the Democratic Party has transformed over the last six years. He acknowledged that if President Biden’s strategy could have succeeded, it would have. The emphasis now, he asserts, should be on demonstrating readiness for the future.

Buttigieg highlighted the need to focus on what comes next instead of longing for a ‘return to normal.’ “The most important thing is — are we demonstrating a readiness to be focused on building what’s next…?” he questioned.

Although distancing from Biden’s ideas, Buttigieg acknowledged Biden as a ‘good man’ and ‘good boss,’ despite stating they were not close. Buttigieg appreciated the opportunities given to him by Biden but clarified that he wouldn’t claim Biden as a mentor.

Recent polls, like the University of New Hampshire Granite State Poll, show Buttigieg competing closely with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for a potential 2028 presidential run. Buttigieg is focusing on progressive proposals, such as reforming the Electoral College and expanding the Supreme Court, while acknowledging the public’s frustration with the aging political system.

Fox News political analyst Reince Priebus criticized Buttigieg for aligning with individuals perceived as far from the mainstream. He cautioned that such positions might place Democrats on ‘the wrong side of normal.’
