Platner’s Defiant Stand Amid Allegations
Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner addressed supporters at a campaign rally in Bar Harbor, Maine. Despite facing scrutiny from allegations made by former romantic partners, Platner expressed gratitude towards his supporters. ‘Maine, you had my back,’ Platner exclaimed to the crowd, referencing past comments made online during his personal struggles with PTSD and recovery.
The 41-year-old Marine veteran is competing against David Costello in the Maine primary. The race determines who will oppose Republican Senator Susan Collins in the general election. Platner noted the loyalty of supporters amidst his history being scrutinized.
‘When politically motivated, serious, and false accusations are made against me, Maine, you have my back,’ he stated.
Allegations Surface
The rally followed accusations reported by The New York Times. Platner’s ex, Lyndsey Fifield, accused him of physically threatening behavior over a decade ago. She described an instance where Platner allegedly twisted her arm during an argument and blocked her from leaving a room. ‘It hurt,’ she acknowledged, ‘but it didn’t cause injury.’
Fifield clarified Platner ‘never hit or punched her.’ The Times was unable to independently verify these claims. After the article’s release, Fifield criticized the Times for its portrayal of her account.
A Times spokesperson stated that several women had shared experiences with Platner. The publication stands by its reporting.
Platner’s Response
Platner denied the allegations, labeling them as politically driven and untrue. His supporters at the Maine rally remained supportive, applauding his speech. Democratic Representative Ro Khanna of California also attended the event.
Platner conveyed his commitment to addressing past mistakes but rejected more serious charges. As Maine’s Senate race draws national focus, Platner plans to continue his campaign despite criticism.
