Los Angeles police officers fatally shot a dog after responding to a call about a screaming woman, which turned out to be a celebration of the New York Knicks winning the NBA championship. The incident occurred in Canoga Park, a Los Angeles neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley, shortly after the Knicks secured the NBA Finals victory against the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) issued a statement explaining their response to the initial radio call regarding the screaming. Upon arrival, officers were directed to an apartment unit by the caller. Inside, a resident with a barking “large dog” greeted the officers. The officers requested that the resident secure her dog, and she briefly closed the door.
According to the LAPD, when the resident reopened the door, the dog exited and charged at one of the officers. This led to an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS), resulting in the dog’s death. The Los Angeles Department of Animal Services responded to the scene, taking custody of the deceased dog. The dog’s owner cooperated with the investigation.
The dog, named Jameson, was clad in a New York Knicks jersey, highlighting the celebratory context of the incident. The owner’s girlfriend shared these details with NBC News.
A TikTok video, viewed over 15 million times, shows a woman mourning over Jameson, expressing grief and frustration. She remarks on their happiness about the Knicks’ win, exclaiming “We were just so happy. We just celebrating the Knicks.” Approximately six officers are visible in the video, while the woman and others off-camera criticize the officers’ actions.
Comments from off-camera accuse the police of misplaced priorities, highlighting other local crimes. The LAPD confirmed that the woman’s shouting related to celebrating the Knicks’ first NBA championship in 53 years.
