President Donald Trump declared on Monday a plan to implement a 50 percent tariff on the majority of goods imported from Canada. This measure will be put into action in 30 days if Canada does not remove what the U.S. administration refers to as “discriminatory” trade barriers affecting American products.
This announcement comes amidst heightened trade tensions, with Trump expressing frustration over what he sees as unfair barriers that disadvantage U.S. goods in the Canadian market.
The president made this statement following a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, which took place during a NATO gathering in Ankara, Turkey.
The U.S. administration hopes that the threat of increased tariffs will encourage Canada to reconsider its current trade policies. However, this move could escalate the economic conflict between the two countries if an agreement is not reached.
