Representative Thomas Kean Jr., a Republican from New Jersey, recently shared that he had been hospitalized due to depression. This announcement places him among the many in the U.S. who have faced similar mental health challenges. More than one in four adults in the country have reported being diagnosed with depression at some point in their lives.
In a typical year, over 8% of U.S. adults may experience a major depressive episode. The nation sees over 500,000 hospitalizations for depressive disorders each year. During his speech on the House floor in Washington, Mr. Kean, 57, reflected on how depression had been a significant part of his life over the recent months. He did not provide specific details about his treatment.
Dr. Mark Rapaport, President of the American Psychiatric Association, highlighted that depression often appears at a young age, although it can begin in middle age or later in life. He emphasized the importance of acknowledging depression as a treatable condition. “I’m grateful that the congressperson is able to be forthcoming because this is a treatable disease of the brain, and we need people to know that,” Dr. Rapaport stated.
A Safe Environment
Experts point out several reasons for hospitalization due to depression. The most common reason involves patients experiencing suicidal thoughts or a risk of self-harm. This underlines the necessity of a safe and supportive environment for individuals dealing with depression. Recognizing and understanding these issues is crucial for providing the right support and treatment, ensuring those affected by depression receive the care they need.
