Sally Field Highlights Importance of Free Speech

1 month ago 0

Actress Sally Field recently discussed the significance of the First Amendment on CBS’s “60 Minutes.” She recalled memorizing its words in seventh grade: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof or abridging the freedom of speech or of the press or the right of the people peacefully to assemble.”

Reflecting on her deeper understanding, Field noted the First Amendment’s personal impact over nearly 67 years. “It’s the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. I barely knew what it meant at the time. I certainly didn’t know the importance of it. And now, almost 67 years later, I understand it like never before,” she said.

Sally Field stands out in Hollywood for her praise of American constitutional heritage, especially as many peers criticize U.S. policies. After the January 2026 shooting of Renée Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother, by a federal immigration agent, the entertainment industry responded with national outcry and a debate on immigration tactics. At the Golden Globes, stars like Mark Ruffalo, Wanda Sykes, Natasha Lyonne, and Jean Smart wore protest pins reading “Be Good” and “ICE Out” in homage to Good and opposition to the agency.

Field stressed respect for all citizens’ rights to express opinions, rooted in the First Amendment. “I have the right to speak out, make a sign, and peacefully join a protest without fear of punishment or retribution, or worse,” Field said. She emphasized the necessity of protecting democracy and the Constitution’s opening, “We the People.” “I believe in the resilience of our Constitution, and I believe in the goodness and strength of the people,” she added.

Known for her vast career over six decades, Field won two Academy Awards for Best Actress for “Norma Rae” (1979) and “Places in the Heart” (1984). Her notable films include “Forrest Gump,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” and Spielberg’s “Lincoln.”
