Victor Wembanyama achieved his first NBA Finals victory as the San Antonio Spurs defeated the New York Knicks 115-111. This win reduces the Knicks’ lead to 2-1 in the series.
Wembanyama made a significant impact with 32 points, eight rebounds, and six assists, showcasing his wide-ranging skills. Spurs coach Mitch Johnson noted that Wembanyama’s strong performance was expected, driven by his sources of motivation.
“I’m sure Victor has numerous sources of motivation,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “I don’t think any of us are surprised or expect anything different than a strong performance.”
The victory marked the Knicks’ first loss in 46 days, ending their 13-game winning streak. This streak was the second-longest in NBA postseason history. The Knicks missed an opportunity to get closer to their first championship since 1973. Their last defeat before this was by the Atlanta Hawks in April.
The Knicks had inspired enthusiasm in New York, with fans eagerly attending games and holding watch parties. However, Wembanyama and the Spurs disrupted this momentum by taking their first home NBA Finals game since 1999.
Knicks coach Mike Brown expressed concerns about the Spurs’ notable advantage in free throw attempts in the second half. Yet, he acknowledged the challenging nature of the series and the skill of their opponents.
“I tell the guys, it’s a seven-game series for a reason,” Brown said. “They are a great team. They are well-coached. They have an iconic player. It’s not going to be easy.”
Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox made crucial shots to prevent the Spurs from trailing 3-0, a situation no NBA team has successfully recovered from. They will have the chance to level the series soon, with Game 5 secured at home.
In the Knicks’ defense, Jalen Brunson scored 32 points while OG Anunoby contributed 28. Fans faced long lines due to increased security, with some paying substantial amounts for tickets, eager for the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden after 27 years.
Despite a past mistake in Game 2, Wembanyama’s performance was nearly flawless in the latest game, scoring crucial points in the final quarter. San Antonio withstood Brunson’s comeback attempt, maintaining a lead built with Wembanyama’s help.
An ideal start for the Spurs, highlighted by Wembanyama’s efficient plays, set the tone early. After some initial frustration from the fans, the Knicks managed to take the lead again by halftime. Yet ultimately, San Antonio regained control in the third quarter and secured the win.
The Knicks had been dominant in the Eastern Conference playoffs, but their slow start in the fourth quarter was detrimental. Notably affected by key players’ limited performances and foul troubles, they were unable to sustain their usually potent postseason form.
