Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has spoken out about a troubling pattern of vandalism affecting the National Mall. The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool recently suffered considerable damage from these acts.
Burgum described the extensive efforts to restore the site and the deployment of increased security measures. Authorities have arrested seven individuals believed to be involved in the vandalism. He emphasized that such actions constitute an attack on the country and promised prosecution to the fullest extent.
Burgum made his comments while appearing on ‘Fox & Friends Weekend,’ where he shared details of the Trump administration’s response to the vandalism. Seven arrests have been made, multiple citations issued, and 18 police reports filed regarding the incidents.
‘When people are attacking the Reflecting Pool, it is like an attack on our country,’ Burgum stated. ‘These are our most sacred monuments, and those responsible will face full prosecution.’
The damage to the Reflecting Pool includes a 350-foot-long cut into the industrial rubber liner, allegedly made with a box cutter. Vandalism included anti-Trump graffiti, such as the number ‘8647,’ which many interpret as a call to action against the president.
President Donald Trump acknowledged the vandalism, noting the Reflecting Pool’s deliberate targeting. He described the damage as a deliberate scar inflicted on the monument.
Burgum highlighted ongoing repairs and beautification efforts in the nation’s capital to prepare for America’s 250th anniversary. More than 50 parks have been restored, 48 monuments repaired, 22 fountains brought back into operation, and approximately 1,700 lights fixed throughout the National Mall.
The Reflecting Pool is now surrounded by fencing as part of the ongoing damage investigation. This measure also prepares for July 4 celebrations, which will feature fireworks near the monument.
Interior Secretary Burgum’s strong stance on prosecution underscores the administration’s commitment to safeguarding the country’s monuments from further harm.
