Senate Republicans Remove Funds for Trump’s Ballroom Project from Bill

1 month ago 0

Senate Republicans looked ready to abandon a divisive plan to allocate $1 billion for President Trump’s White House ballroom project. The funds were initially included in a filibuster-proof immigration bill, but faced opposition from within the party.

Senator John Kennedy from Louisiana, after meeting with fellow Republican senators, stated, “My understanding is that the security money has come out because the votes aren’t there.” The bill was still being finalized at the time, and GOP leaders did not comment on its specific contents. It was uncertain if they would attempt to include general Secret Service funds in the package in a way that could still support the project indirectly.

The decision to remove the funding highlighted the Senate Republicans’ reluctance to openly back Trump’s cherished project. This outcome represented a setback for the White House and illustrated the limits of Trump’s influence over Senate Republicans, who generally complied with his demands during his second term.

The proposed legislation involved providing approximately $72 billion for Trump’s immigration initiatives. However, the plan faced immediate challenges when the Senate’s nonpartisan parliamentarian ruled that including the provision violated the procedural rules the Republicans were using to prevent a Democratic filibuster. This ruling forced the party to either remove or revise the provision.
