Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina expressed concerns about the Republican Party’s chances in the 2026 midterm elections during an appearance on MS NOW’s ‘The Beat’. He emphasized the difficulty the GOP faces in retaining control of the House, calling it ‘almost statistically impossible’. Tillis, aligning himself with President Trump, stated that his support stems from Trump being the leader of their party. ‘He’s the face of our party, and I aim for our party to be well-positioned for elections,’ Tillis remarked.
The senator acknowledged potential setbacks for Republicans this election season but remained optimistic about recovery. While Tillis is not seeking reelection, he predicted the GOP might maintain Senate control, albeit narrowly. ‘Candidates in Maine, Ohio, and Arkansas need strong campaigns and backing to succeed,’ he noted.
Currently, Republicans face challenges including President Trump’s approval ratings, the war in Iran, a tariff conflict with Canada, and concerns over inflation. Recent polling labels the Senate race as uncertain, with Democrats requiring four seat gains to secure majority control. Competitions in states like Maine, Ohio, Kansas, Iowa, Texas, and Alaska are fiercely contested.
Polls from The New York Times/Siena indicate Democrats leading in Texas and Alaska, while margins in Ohio, Iowa, and Kansas remain tight, generally falling within the margin of error. Decision Desk HQ forecasts a high probability for Democratic candidates like Roy Cooper, former North Carolina governor, to secure Tillis’s open Senate seat. Their analysis also suggests Democrats have significant chances to flip the House and the Senate.
