1 hour ago 0

Serena Williams of the United States returned to Wimbledon, facing Maya Joint of Australia in a first-round women’s singles match. The match took place at the highly esteemed Wimbledon Tennis Championships in London on June 30, 2026.

The crowd’s anticipation was palpable as Williams made her entrance. They cheered loudly when the 23-time Grand Slam winner stepped onto Centre Court, marking her first singles match in almost four years. At 44, Williams showcased her skills, though she was defeated in three sets by Joint, who is nearly half her age. Despite the loss, Williams received a warm round of applause from the spectators.

‘It was really great to be back at Wimbledon. I never expected to be here,’ Williams mentioned in a statement. ‘The atmosphere was amazing. Walking out was amazing. I definitely relished it and missed it and enjoyed the moment more than anything.’

In the match, Williams lost 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 to the 20-year-old Joint. Williams served with notable speed, at times exceeding 120 mph, and struck powerful groundstrokes. However, her movement seemed limited, allowing Joint, ranked 87th, to capitalize on Williams’ pace and take control of significant points.

Williams decided to return to tennis by participating in two doubles matches before Wimbledon began. Her last singles match was at the 2022 U.S. Open. Joint expressed admiration for Williams, highlighting her as a legendary figure on the Wimbledon courts.

Williams boasts 98 career victories and seven singles titles at the All England Club. For Joint, this victory was monumental, as it was her first Wimbledon win in only her second appearance, after a loss in the first round last year.

Williams, ranked outside the singles due to her time away, received wild card invitations to play in both singles and doubles with her sister Venus. This marked a joyful return, with her two daughters in attendance, watching from the front row of her players’ box.

The match began with a standing ovation from fans. Signs with messages such as ‘Welcome Back’ and a T-shirt reading ‘Unstoppable Queen’ were part of the welcoming gestures. Williams showed signature moments of brilliance with a topspin lob winner and a 121 mph ace. Yet, a double-fault resulted in a break and the first set loss.

In the second set, Williams made an impressive comeback by saving four break points to lead 6-5. A decisive serve denied Joint’s match point during the tiebreaker. Williams then sealed the set with a substantial serve and a missed forehand from Joint, keeping the audience thrilled.

Joint gained control in the third set and ultimately secured her win after two hours and twenty-two minutes. Both players recorded 37 unforced errors, but Joint led in winners with a ratio of 40 to 26.

Apart from this intense match, the tournament saw successes for several notable players. Alexander Zverev and defending champion Iga Swiatek advanced to the second round. Zverev defeated Alexander Blockx in a gripping four-set contest, while Swiatek managed to overcome Taylor Townsend despite challenges with her serve.

Elena Rybakina, a second seed participant, moved forward with a win against Lois Boisson. In an upset, Ben Shelton lost to Finnish qualifier Otto Virtanen. Additionally, the final Wimbledon appearance for Stan Wawrinka ended with a loss to Matteo Berrettini in a competitive match.
