Serena Williams announced her return to professional tennis after nearly four years away from the sport. The 44-year-old will compete in the doubles event at the HSBC Championships at Queen’s Club in London from June 8 to June 14, in collaboration with Nike.
Serena’s New Chapter
Williams, who stepped away from tennis in September 2022, chose Queen’s Club for her comeback. She expressed her excitement about returning to the grass courts, which have played a significant role in her career achievements. Williams stated, “Queen’s Club feels like the perfect place to begin this next chapter. Grass has given me some of the most meaningful moments of my career, and I’m excited to be back competing on one of the sport’s most iconic stages.”
Never Truly Retired
Although Williams took a break in 2022, she never fully embraced the idea of retirement. She was open about her mixed feelings regarding stepping away from the game. At that time, she expressed a desire to focus on family with her husband, Alexis Ohanian. The couple welcomed their second child in 2023, following the birth of their first in 2017.
Return Celebrated by the WTA
Williams’ competitive spirit remains strong, leading to her return to the WTA Tour. Her comeback has been well-received by the WTA, with chair Valerie Camillo celebrating her legacy and contributions beyond the court. Camillo remarked, “Serena is one of the greatest athletes of all time, with a legacy that extends far beyond the court. Her return is an expression of her passion for competition, and I cannot wait to see her face a new generation of top players.”
Williams is recognized not only as a champion but also as a successful entrepreneur and advocate on important issues. The WTA is thrilled to have her back in a dynamic period for women’s tennis.
