The remains of singer Oliver Tree have returned to California following a tragic helicopter crash in Rio de Janeiro that claimed his life along with five others. His social media channels confirmed his return after the collision on June 14 between two helicopters.
In a statement, it was announced, ‘Oliver is now back in California where he can finally rest.’
According to reports by The Associated Press, the other victims identified were Gaspar Prim Díaz, a well-known Argentine YouTuber named Gaspi, and another Argentine, Lucas Vignale. The rest were Brazilians Lucas Brito, Charles Marsillac, and Alexandre Souza. The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation, with authorities exploring possible human error by the pilot or air traffic controllers.
Oliver Tree, aged 32, was in South America for a world tour, with a performance slated for June 6 in São Paulo, as per his Facebook schedule.
The crash occurred in the Recreio dos Bandeirantes neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro on June 15, and images were captured by Fabio Teixeira from Anadolu via Getty Images.
Following the tragedy, his social media post thanked fans: ‘The constant love, support and positivity is helping the family, friends and collaborators make it through these extremely difficult times.’
Tree, legally known as Oliver Tree Nickell from Santa Cruz, was informed of his passing through a producer involved in a collaborative music project in Brazil.
‘Peace be with Oliver,’ expressed his father, Jesse Nickell, via a text message last week.
Oliver Tree was distinctive for his vibrant attire, a unique mullet hairstyle, a thin mustache, and an optimistic attitude. His Instagram profile bore the motto: ‘No matter how strange you think you look, no matter how ugly you feel, you are beautiful.’
Tree collaborated with notable pop and electronic dance music artists. His notable tracks include ‘Life Goes On,’ peaking at 71 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2022, and ‘Miss You’ with German musician Robin Schulz, which reached 84 the same year.
Beyond music charts, Oliver Tree’s impact was profound, with tributes from around the world following the news of his presence on the ill-fated flight.
His social media account revealed ongoing plans for an endowment aimed at creating a grant: ‘Dr. Oliver Tree’s Extremely Epic Grant For Baby Geniuses’ coming soon. We will make sure his wish comes to fruition so that more joy, love and art can be spread into the world, that was his final wish.’
In April, during the ‘Zack Sang Show’ on YouTube, Tree addressed the grant and speculated that his music might receive greater appreciation posthumously: ‘That’s when people appreciate you, when you’re not there anymore.’
The Instagram message offered assurance: ‘Your legacy will live on forever.’
