Smithsonian’s Approach Criticized for Promoting ‘Activist Agenda’

Fox News host Laura Ingraham has accused the Smithsonian of promoting a divisive ‘activist agenda’ through its concept of ‘restorative history.’ She criticized the framing of America in a negative light. Ingraham highlighted concerns expressed by National Museum of American History director Anthea Hartig regarding controversial exhibits and educational materials. These concerns include an alleged ‘fetish attire’ display and the exclusion of pro-life history.

In addition, Ingraham questioned the use of taxpayer funds to promote such programs. The Trump administration claims it has found evidence of violations by the Smithsonian of federal nondiscrimination laws. They are considering withdrawing support unless changes are made. A letter from the Department of the Interior (DOI) mentioned potential violations, including the creation of a hostile work environment and discriminatory practices based on race and ethnicity. However, no specific evidence was detailed in the letter.

Debate Over Diversity and Ideological Bias

An investigation by Fox News Digital revealed that many Smithsonian leaders advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Trump administration views these efforts as racially discriminatory. President Donald Trump has criticized the Smithsonian on platforms like Truth Social, labeling the institution as ‘OUT OF CONTROL’ and ‘woke.’ Conservative political leaders allege that progressive ideology influences the Smithsonian’s presentation of American history.

An executive order issued in 2025 mandated the removal of what was referred to as ‘improper ideology’ from the museum. This order tasked various government officials to use their authority to restore trust in the Smithsonian. Amid this, the Smithsonian announced it is reviewing a White House letter about a probe into content at various museums.

Tensions Over Federal Support and Leadership

The administration has threatened to cut support unless the Smithsonian addresses alleged biases and issues outlined in the DOI’s recent letter. This threat differs from past disputes over the Smithsonian’s $1 billion annual federal funding. The letter stated that agencies could not support the Smithsonian under current leadership if bias persists. It called for an appropriate response addressing executive leadership and institutional ideology.

Significantly, the Smithsonian operates under some oversight by board members appointed through congressional resolutions. The administration may use upcoming vacancies on the Smithsonian’s board of regents to increase its influence.

The Department of the Interior requested a meeting between Smithsonian representatives and administration officials to discuss the alleged bias and civil rights violations. During a congressional hearing in July, Anthea Hartig stated the museum’s intent to document diverse American life without taking political sides.

Reactions to Recent Developments

The Smithsonian declined to comment on the letter when contacted by Fox News Digital. Reporting has highlighted connections between museum leadership and liberal advocacy or Democratic politics. Exhibits at both the National Museum of American History and the Smithsonian-run National Zoo include discussions on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

While Fox News Digital reached out for a response, the White House did not comment on the situation.
