Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals featured a thrilling matchup between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs secured a double-overtime victory on Monday, thanks to Victor Wembanyama’s outstanding performance with 41 points and 24 rebounds. The Thunder, however, bounced back in the following games. They won Game 2 by nine points and Game 3 by 15, with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander proving his worth as the reigning NBA MVP.
As the series continued, the Thunder sought to extend their lead to 3-1 at the Frost Bank Center on Sunday, hoping to seal the series. Yet, Wembanyama had other plans. Known as ‘Wemby’ among fans, he delivered 22 points in the first half. He capped the half with a remarkable 42-foot 3-pointer, shot from the Spurs’ logo as the halftime buzzer sounded. This gave the Spurs a 50-38 lead going into the second half.
Wembanyama’s shot was a standout moment, as he executed the long-range shot with the same precision as a regular jumper. This playoff run marks Wembanyama’s first, having been the top pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. His leadership has led the Spurs to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2017.
Wembanyama has also been acknowledged as the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year, an accolade he earned unanimously. Despite this achievement, Wembanyama was driven by not winning the MVP award. Gilgeous-Alexander’s MVP win before Game 1 motivated him further. Wembanyama’s response came with his notable game where he scored 41 points and secured 24 rebounds, showcasing his determination.
For Wembanyama to cement his standing in NBA history, he aims to guide the Spurs in defeating the Thunder, preventing Oklahoma City from becoming the first repeat champions since the Golden State Warriors in 2017 and 2018. The winner of the Western Conference Finals is likely to face the New York Knicks, who lead their series against the Cleveland Cavaliers 3-0 and have an impressive 10 consecutive playoff wins.
