Subpoena Issued in Investigation of Alleged Classified Information Leak

1 month ago 0

A federal grand jury has issued a subpoena to Daniel Richman, a former advisor to James Comey, as part of a fresh investigation into the alleged leaking of classified information to the media. Richman’s involvement suggests that the Justice Department is revisiting the issue previously probed during President Trump’s term.

This new investigation looks into whether Comey leaked information to the New York Times. The previous inquiry into this matter was terminated with the transition to President Biden’s administration. In addition, Comey is also under scrutiny for alleged threats made against Trump.

Richman played a significant role in the earlier investigation, which dates back to 2018. He later claimed that his Fourth Amendment rights were infringed upon when prosecutors seized his electronic devices during investigations spanning from 2019 to 2020. A federal judge in Washington, D.C., ruled in favor of Richman’s claim last December.

Prosecutors had previously relied on Richman’s files to indict Comey for purportedly making false statements and obstructing Congress in connection with his 2020 testimony regarding FBI officials anonymously sharing information with news outlets. Richman himself was accused of communicating with reporters about investigations into Hillary Clinton, who lost to Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

The latest legal action coincides with ongoing litigation concerning Comey’s Instagram post, “86 47,” which prosecutors interpret as a threat to Trump. Comey faces two federal charges in this case, potentially resulting in up to ten years of imprisonment. The original prosecutor for this matter resigned in early June.

According to acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, threatening the President is a serious offense. The indictment against Comey alleges he incited violence against Trump, necessitating accountability for anyone who intensifies threats against the President.
