Teen Innovator Develops Grocery Genius to Tackle Food Waste

At 17, Smit Kothari has launched an AI-powered website named Grocery Genius to combat food waste and hunger. This innovative tool helps users make the most of their pantry ingredients by generating custom recipes and tracking food inventory.

Kothari, inspired by observing his family’s struggle with using random ingredients efficiently, created Grocery Genius. He recognized that many families face similar challenges and decided to address this issue.

The website allows users to input their available food items into the app, which then suggests three recipes and provides nutritional information and tips for saving money. Features such as meal planning and nutrient tracking, focusing on calories and macros, are integrated into the program.

Grocery Genius offers tailored recipes considering dietary restrictions and cooking skills. The “Smart Pantry” feature alerts users before food expiration, encouraging use or donation to prevent waste.

Kothari identified a correlation between food waste and hunger, noting how some foods expire and go to waste while others suffer from starvation.

A trip to Africa exposed Kothari to impoverished families battling hunger firsthand. This experience further fueled his determination to address food waste and hunger.

Grocery Genius aims to be “your kitchen’s smartest assistant,” accessible for free with email registration. It’s designed to help users cook smarter and efficiently.

Christopher Tan, president and CEO of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, assisted Kothari during the app’s development. Tan emphasized the app’s diverse applications for aiding families in need and those providing donations.

Kothari’s app won second place in the national Congressional App Challenge, which encourages coding skills among middle and high school students.

As a rising senior at Ocean Lakes High School, Kothari plans to continue app development during his college education. He remains committed to enhancing the app with user feedback to maximize its potential in addressing food waste and hunger.
