Giorgia Meloni responded firmly to recent claims by Donald Trump, asserting, “I and Italy never beg.” The dispute began when Trump alleged that Meloni pleaded for a photograph during the Group of Seven summit earlier in the week. He told Italian broadcaster La7 that she was eager for the photo. “She begged me to take a photo with her,” Trump said, adding that he had considered declining.
Meloni, visibly upset, labeled Trump’s remarks as “totally fabricated.” She questioned Trump’s treatment of allies, noting, “I don’t know why the president of the United States behaves this way with his own allies.” This wasn’t the first incident. In April, Trump had criticized Meloni for not supporting the U.S.-Israeli actions against Iran, a remark she hadn’t publicly addressed at the time.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani described Trump’s comments as “serious” and “offensive” to Italy, announcing the cancellation of his upcoming trip to the U.S. Footage from the G7 depicted Meloni and Trump in an extended conversation, which Trump claimed was at Meloni’s request. “She’s probably happy I talked to her. I didn’t have to talk to her,” Trump remarked in the interview.
Only a dubbed version of the interview was available; the original audio was not released. Another video showed Meloni animatedly speaking to Trump with little visible response from him. Previously regarded as an ally, Meloni attended Trump’s inauguration in January 2025, where she was the sole European leader present.
Trump had previously praised Meloni, leader of the right-wing Brothers of Italy party, as a significant figure in Europe’s populist movement. However, their relationship has recently deteriorated. After Meloni’s criticism of Trump’s comments on Pope Leo XIV, Trump accused her of lacking courage. This incident marks a notable decline in what was once a strong political partnership.
