Three Charged in Tragic Bridge Jumping Incident in Brazil

2 weeks ago 0

Three men face homicide charges in Brazil following the death of a woman who fell over 130 feet from a bridge in Limeira. The victim, Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, 21, was not securely attached to safety equipment during the incident. The charged individuals, Luis Felipe Feliciano Egoroff, 32, Vitor de Freitas Goncalves, 27, and Maicon Fernandes Cintra, 42, were detained and face accusations of homicide with eventual intent. This type of charge applies when individuals engage in dangerous acts that pose a fatal risk without the intention to kill.

Local police caught the men attempting to flee the scene. All three are reportedly jumping instructors. They admitted the lapse in securing Eduarda but did not recall which one of them was responsible for verifying her equipment, according to reports. Video footage shows Eduarda being thrown off the bridge, wearing a helmet but lacking any visible safety cord. Authorities continue to hold the men in detention.

The incident took place on Skeleton Bridge, a former railway bridge in São Paulo state. While reports do not confirm if Eduarda had previous experience, rope jumping uses climbing ropes creating a pendulum swing, unlike bungee jumping which employs elastic cords. The sport’s creator, Dan Osman, also died tragically during a jump in 1998.

Tributes pour in for Eduarda, describing her as dedicated, joyful, and respectful. Panobianco Academia, a local gym, shared a heartfelt message, saying her presence brightened any room. Eduarda’s mother expressed profound grief, cherishing the memories of her daughter and the privilege of being called ‘mom.’

Limeira city officials criticized federal negligence, announcing intentions to sue the federal government over the bridge’s management. Mayor Murilo Félix emphasized efforts to implement local safety ordinances, hampered by federal inaction, highlighting federal responsibility. Federal bodies have yet to respond.

Eduarda’s death followed her last social media activity, where she humorously questioned her decision to jump. Despite government statements, the equipment’s failure to function properly remains central to the tragedy.
