Tornado Strikes Northeastern Wisconsin, Causing Widespread Damage

Madison, Wis. — A powerful tornado hit northeastern Wisconsin on Monday, turning the midday sky dark and forcing workers to take shelter in office basements. Intense winds shattered homes, littered highways with twisted metal, and cut power to over 30,000 residents. Despite the chaos, no fatalities or injuries were reported as of Monday evening, although searches continued, according to Gordon Hintz, Winnebago County’s top elected official.

The National Weather Service identified the tornado in Winnebago County, located roughly 90 miles northwest of Milwaukee. Damage was reported in Appleton and Menasha, where Police Chief Matt Albrecht confirmed significant impact on homes and businesses.

Storm Generated by Heat and Humidity

National Weather Service meteorologist Scott Berschback explained the tornado was part of a large storm system fueled by heat and humidity moving through the Great Lakes region.

Hintz noted it could take several days to restore power to the affected area.

Heather Schroeder witnessed the tornado’s destruction near a street corner in Menasha, obliterating a laundromat, bakery, and neighborhood tavern. Schroeder, who works nearby, saw rescue efforts, including the extraction of a person from one of the buildings, although the person’s survival wasn’t confirmed.

“There’s nothing left,” Schroeder lamented, describing the devastation.

Destruction in Menasha Neighborhoods

The tornado peeled roofs from homes and flipped vehicles in Menasha, near Lake Winnebago. Videos captured homes stripped down to their outer walls.

Greg Van Driest, working in downtown Appleton, described the sky’s transformation to a nighttime blackness as “ominous.”

Continuing Searches Amid Damage

Hintz reported numerous incidents of buildings being destroyed and vehicles overturned. All storm warnings were utilized to urge safety precautions.

“Obviously when you look at the damage, Mother Nature doesn’t really care,” Hintz remarked.

Meteorologist Holley Kamba noted significant damage in southern Outagamie County and eastern Winnebago County, with extensive downed trees and power lines.

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers offered state assistance to affected communities.

The weather service in Green Bay issued a tornado warning at 11:59 a.m. for the Fox Cities area, including Appleton, Menasha, and Neenah, urging immediate shelter due to the threat of flying debris and potential damage.
