In northern Niger, a tragic incident claimed the lives of at least 49 people stranded in the Sahara Desert. These individuals, all citizens of Niger, were returning from a religious festival in Mali when their truck broke down, leaving them trapped without water. This event unfolded more than 80 kilometers west of Assamaka, near the borders of Mali and Algeria.
According to the Agadez region governorate, two men managed to survive the ordeal. They trekked over 50 kilometers to find a water source, eventually reaching Assamaka to alert the authorities. The truck had been traveling from Talhandek, a Malian town located about 300 kilometers from the Nigerien border, before it got stranded.
The reasons for the truck’s breakdown remain unclear, as does the length of time those on board endured before their tragic demise. A delegation sent by Agadez Region Governor Gen. Ibra Boulama Issa discovered disturbing scenes. Bodies lay both under and around the inoperative vehicle.
Photos released by the governorate reveal a haunting landscape with scattered clothing and belongings around the lifeless bodies. The governorate noted that the travelers, without water and unable to fix their vehicle, faced the harsh desert environment. Temperatures soared, and the lack of supply points made survival near impossible.
The buried victims were laid to rest in mass graves at the scene, with officials describing the task as both a delicate and emotionally exhausting experience for the survivors.
